When you find a good thing, you hang on to it

Biqa Jillo knows a good thing when he sees it. Originally from Ethiopia, Biqa came to Minnesota in 2003 after living in Kenya. In 2012, after living in a variety of rental complexes throughout the metro, Biqa moved to Ames Lake Neighborhood and found a community to nurture and support both him and his family.

When asked what makes Ames Lake Neighborhood so different from the other places he has lived, Biqa replied, “The place is clean and peaceful. If I have a problem, I can call and they take care of it right away”.

When it comes to family and social supports, Biqa has discovered an advocate in Resident Services Coordinator, Kacee Moua. “She helps me with anything I need.” shares Biqa. From filing out health insurance forms, job searches on the computer or researching car insurance, Kacee is always

welcoming and willing to help Biqa. In addition to Kacee’s one-on-one attention, Biqa has participated in the onsite computer classes provided by the St. Paul Public Library Mobile Workplace and his teenage daughter, Naddi, has been active in Ames Teen Group, the onsite after-school program for 6th-12th grade resident youth. Biqa reveals the after-school program’s homework help has assisted Naddi in doing in high school.

Even though rent prices have recently increased, Biqa isn’t going anywhere. He appreciates what the Ames Lake community has to offer both in physical accommodations and family supports. His satisfaction isn’t his alone, Biqa has invited others to come and apply for an apartment at Ames Lake Neighborhood. “I’m very happy to be living here. It is my home.”
